Shreegauri Sawant aka Gauri Sawant is an Indian transgender rights activist, social worker, managing director, and founder of the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust.

She was born on 22-07-1980 in Bhavani Peth, Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India as Ganesh.

She was born as the 2nd child with a gap of 10 years to a police officer father Suresh Sawant & a homemaker mother, and she has an elder sister.

In 1987 when she was just 7 years old, her mother passed away and she grew up with her grandmother.

In 1994 when she was 14 years old, she left at her parent's home.

In 2000 at the age of 20, she founded an NGO called "The Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust" to provide counseling to transgender people.

Her NGO, The Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust promotes safe sex and provides help to Transgender/LGBT & HIV people.

In 2008, she adopted a 4 years old girl named Gayatri whose mother was a sex worker and died from AIDS.

In 2014, she filed a petition for the adoption rights of transgender people in the Supreme Court of India.

She became the first transgender to file a petition in the Supreme Court of India for the rights of transgender people.

After her petition, the Supreme Court has been recognized transgender as the third gender.
